The Princess of Cragside
Women of Old Yorkshire
by Jo Priestley
Blurb:
The historical setting of the Piece Hall in the cobbled streets of old Yorkshire is brought to life in this tale of love seeking to overcome post-war bitterness and social pressures.
Bridie Foxcroft is a girl who values family above all else, so when her best friend marries her brother, her dearest wish comes true. The family live in a beautiful, old house below the formidable crags of Halifax, and she loves nothing more than venturing up the hillside in all weathers to look down upon her home. She has even secured her dream job at Frobisher’s Doll Emporium, so life in northern England at the end of the 1940s could not be any better for Bridie.
Elliott Frobisher is set to one day inherit the emporium, and he has nothing but admiration and respect for the young woman with a kind heart coated in commonsense.
But Bridie has a secret. She is in love with a man who is hated by the whole town, and her contented, sleepy life is about to turn on its head.
Finding our voice is so dangerous when speaking out against long-held resentments runs the risk of losing everything, and everyone we hold dear.
Praise for The Princess of Cragside:
"But I have to say this story is my new favourite of them all , based around Christmastime, you almost feel like you are a part of the story yourself , totally drawn in and unable to put the book down."
~ Mrs J. Jackson, Amazon 5* Review
"Jo's description brings the whole book alive, the story is after WW2, feelings are raw towards a family and how people take awhile or never understand why one man never served, also tells about the true friendship between two young girls Bridie and Edyth, who worked at the doll factory and the connection with Princess Elizabeth and Margaret, another must read."
~ Sue Fletcher, Amazon 5* Review
Jo Priestley
Jo Priestley is a writer from Bronte Country whose simple aim is to entertain and captivate her reader. She grew up with tales around the fireside in the faded glory of her Irish grandmother's ancient house. It created the perfect atmosphere, and a life-long love of storytelling was the legacy she left behind for her granddaughter.
Jo wrote her collection of historical love stories, entitled 'The Women of Old Yorkshire', for over a decade before publishing the first novel in 2023.
'The Calling of Highbrook' was Jo's debut novel; a dark, twisting love story set on the North York Moors. All the novels in her collection have a sprinkling of grit in varying amounts, digging deep to delve into her many years of life experience. Love in all forms are explored, not only romantic, as she believes other great loves are just as important in our lives.
Jo considers raising a large family of strong, kind-hearted daughters to adulthood her greatest achievement. She now commits herself as much to her passion for storytelling to make her family, and particularly her grandmother, proud.
