Mercilessly bullied. Abigeál ‘Abby’ MacKearsin has been for years in her quest to become a physician in 1429. Freshly completing her studies, the Highlander’s healer’s daughter returns home to Kellsey Isle only to discover her talents have been summoned directly by volatile King James I.
Someone must protect Abby, who is thrust into deadly danger on her new journey when the king returns seeking vengeance on those who left him to rot in England. This task falls to Knox MacDarren, the son of her father’s enemy and a gifted apothecary who’s tormented after being wounded at the battle of Harpsdale as a younger lad, but who has risen to become the clan’s strongest warrior.
The pair of secret childhood friends turned enemies, Abby and Knox, take to Inverness to weave through the royal court in hopes of protecting their clans as forbidden feelings spark deeper between them at a time when the king is seizing chiefs and is out for blood at the battle of Split Allegiances.
Can Abby and Knox survive the king, the siege of Inverness, and their own clan’s inner feuds to fulfill their destiny in being together or will it all come crashing down?
Each book in the Kellsey Isle's Clans is a standalone book within a series featuring protective heroes, strong female heroines, adventure, spice, and an epic happily ever after!
Leaning back, she removed her late grandmother’s necklace, a bronze trinity knot with emerald stone many said matched Abby’s gaze. Having to stand on her tiptoes, both almost fifteen winters old, he was a grand size, like his father Alasdair. The gold chain crossed over Knox’s auburn locks as she stared intently into his eyes.
“’Tis yer first battle beside Duncan and my brother Lachlan,” she said solemnly. “Yer clan needs ye as weel, dinnae chance too great. This will be many to come.”
Knox’s mirth vanished in a blink. “Aye.” His eyes turned a deeper blue, same as the loch on a cloudless day. Only when he was fearful did this occur. “Promise me,” he asked, “ye will stray yer eyes from the battle. I dinnae wish ye to see the terror unfold.”
Once they were friends, but after a horrific injury in battle, Knox can no longer bear to be in Abby’s presence. Fortunately, she is heading to Italy to study medicine at Salerno. However, upon her return, she is older, wiser, and still the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Unfortunately, she is forbidden to him because he cannot sire a child, and she was born to be a mother.
When Abby is summoned to court to attend to the king’s most urgent medical matter, she requires an escort. Who better than Knox to ensure her safety? All they have to do is pretend to be married. Yet, living in such proximity, with desire burning feverishly between them, it’s only a matter of time before this pretend marriage begins to resemble something that looks like a real one.
“A Red Lion’s Alliances (Kellsey Isle’s Clans Book 2)” by Heide Middlebrook promises to captivate readers with its enthralling love story set against the breathtaking backdrop of Scotland. This tale weaves romance and adventure, drawing you into a realm where passion and loyalty collide.
The vivid landscape of 15th-century Scotland unfolds within the pages of this novel, fully immersing readers in a realm teeming with rich sensory experiences. The chaotic and intimidating atmosphere of the battlefield erupts with the thunderous clash of steel, as the cries of valiant warriors reverberate through the air, capturing the raw essence of conflict. In stark contrast, the formidable stones of Hillock Castle rise majestically, standing as enduring symbols of strength and resilience against the ravages of time. Venturing into the depths of the dark and claustrophobic dungeon, the reader can nearly feel the dampness of the walls and see the flickering torchlight casting eerie shadows that dance ominously. This foreboding space sharply contrasts with the grandeur of King James I’s regal throne room, where opulence and authority reign supreme. As the heart of life beats within the bustling kitchens, the air is thick with the enticing aromas of cooking, drawing the reader into a world of culinary delights. The narrow alleyways of Inverness, lined with shadowy taverns that teem with hushed whispers and raucous laughter, speak of danger but also opportunity. The invigorating scents of salt and pine waft through the air, conjuring nostalgic memories of the Kelsey Isle. Each meticulously crafted location weaves depth and authenticity into the narrative, inviting readers not just to observe, but to walk alongside the richly drawn characters as they navigate the challenging complexities of their era.
Middlebrook employs a powerful and distinctive voice that captivates readers from the very first page, making it perfectly suited to the story’s narrative. The infusion of the Scottish dialect adds an authentic regional flavour, while the use of archaic language transports readers to a bygone era. Coupled with vivid and evocative imagery, the narrative flows seamlessly. With a confident and assured tone, Middlebrook expertly invites readers to immerse themselves in the captivating world she has created.
The romance between Abby and Knox unfolds like an enchanting tale, rich in emotion and depth that leaves readers utterly entranced. Their connection is not just swoon-worthy; it is beautifully narrated, pulling the audience into the heart of their love story. The smouldering desire that simmers between Abby and Knox is a potent force, intensified by the profound love and unwavering respect they hold for one another. As their journey unfolds, readers are drawn into their passionate world, fervently wishing for a happy ending to this enthralling tale.
Knox is depicted as a deeply troubled man, grappling with the shadows of his past, his tumultuous emotions, and his complicated feelings for Abby. His internal conflict is strikingly palpable, manifesting in bouts of self-destructive behaviour and poignant emotional outbursts. Haunted by his injuries sustained in battle, he is plagued by the belief that he will never be able to father children. The relentless taunts and ridicule from his so-called friends drive him to seek solace in the forest, where he isolates himself among the towering trees and whispers of the wind. However, the unexpected return of Abby stirs something within him, bringing back memories of their childhood bond. It’s only a question of time before their paths cross again, but that reunion does not come without its own set of challenges. Knox is an honourable man, a character whose complexities evoke both sympathy and respect from readers. His insecurities and feelings of inadequacy serve to deepen the connection readers feel with him, as they resonate with his struggles. Knox’s fierce protectiveness over Abby adds layers to his character, making him all the more compelling. Despite his instincts urging him to keep his distance, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to her, falling deeper under her spell with every shared moment. Each interaction brings a mix of longing and vulnerability, creating a narrative that promises both heartbreak and hope.
Abby is an exceptionally endearing heroine, imbued with the strength and sensitivity that makes her truly remarkable. As the daughter of a chieftain and a skilled healer, she is determined to follow in her mother’s illustrious footsteps, dedicating herself to mastering the art of healing. Her heart is gentle, yet she possesses an indomitable spirit; Abby is strong, capable, and deeply compassionate. In addition to her innate kindness, she wields sharp intelligence and unparalleled resourcefulness, qualities that set her apart in a world where both strength and insight are crucial. After a fateful battle that leaves her childhood friend Knox gravely injured and emotionally distant, Abby embarks on a challenging journey to the renowned Salerno School of Medicine in Italy. This prestigious institution is known for honing the skills of its students, but Abby’s experience there is anything but supportive. She endures relentless bullying and cruel taunts from her peers, which continue to haunt her dreams long after she has left. Yet, despite the turbulent environment, Abby emerges with a wealth of medical knowledge and a newfound resilience. Upon her much-anticipated return home, Abby feels an immense burden lift from her shoulders. However, her heart is not truly at peace until she is reunited with Knox. This time, she is resolute: she will not allow him to have the last word in their complicated relationship! Abby is acutely aware of her feelings for Knox and is undeterred by his inability to have children. For her, love and companionship far outweigh any obstacles. Circumstances conspire to bring them together again when they are compelled to pose as a married couple to appease King James I. The king has summoned Abby to court for a health matter, and her family insists that she cannot attend alone. Her father, wise and protective, has complete faith that Knox will safeguard Abby during this delicate situation. However, their charade requires them to share a chamber, sleep side by side, and act in all the ways a husband and wife would. What could possibly go wrong in such an intimate setting? While Abby’s heart is gentle, her strength and determination shine brightly. Her compassion is matched only by her willingness to stand up for herself and her loved ones. In love with her childhood friend, she is now faced with the challenge of convincing Knox to transform their pretence into a genuine union. Readers cannot help but be captivated by Abby’s kind and nurturing spirit, yet they also witness her fierce resolve. She is prepared to confront the king’s orders if it means protecting her family and her “husband” from harm, demonstrating that real love knows no boundaries and that true strength often lies in compassion.
There are several antagonists in this novel, and each has their own story to tell. In these perilous times, having finally escaped the confines of English captivity, King James I stands resolute in his quest to reclaim his authority. Yet, shadows of ill health loom over him, exacerbated by a healer whose ministrations seem to deepen his suffering. In his desperation, he summons Abby, seeking a remedy for both his body and his spirit. King James is vividly portrayed as a man driven by a fierce determination to reclaim what is rightfully his. Having long been denied his birthright, he is unwavering in his mission to subdue Scotland, believing that the long-held autonomy of the Lord of the Isles must come to an uncompromising end. But before he can project the image of a powerful ruler, he must conquer the debilitating pain that has taken root in his foot, preventing him from standing tall. At times, James I reveals a haughty arrogance and a cunning deceitfulness, particularly when he summons the Highlanders to a Parliament sitting in Inverness, shrouded in the promise of unity while harbouring ulterior motives. Yet, within the walls of the palace, moments of gentleness emerge; he listens attentively to his wife’s counsel, allowing her wisdom to seep into his decisions. Despite the brutal measures he employs against the Lord of the Isles, James I is presented as a commanding king, embodying both the fierce resolve of a ruler and the capacity for compassion when the occasion demands it. His duality paints a complex portrait of a sovereign navigating the tumultuous waters of power and loyalty, intent on forging Scotland’s future even amid personal strife.
The vivid descriptions, compelling characters, and expertly crafted plot come together to create an unforgettable reading experience. If you’re passionate about historical romances that immerse you in a rich and realistic setting, then “A Red Lion’s Alliances (Kellsey Isle’s Clans Book 2)” by Heide Middlebrook is absolutely essential for your reading list.

Heide Middlebrook writes historical romance novels and stories as an independent author. History captured her interest as a young girl after touring historical sites, then as a teenager a love for romance reading took root. Why the romance genre? Those happily ever afters!
Many of her novels are set atop of the Scottish Highlands because of her fascination about the fierce spirit of the people found within Scotland’s history coupled with her Scottish heritage.
